The difference between Sign Language and Lip-Reading
There are many differences between lip-reading and sign language interpreting. Sign language (also signed language) interpreting has its own rules for vocabulary and grammar. It mainly uses manual communication and body language to convey the message, instead of sound patterns. This involves simultaneously combining hand shapes, orientation and movement of the hands, body and facial expressions to fluidly express a speaker's thoughts
Lip-reading is mainly a one-way communication method which means that the hearing person can understand you if you speak, but trying to understand the hearing person can be a challenge. Only around 30% of English can be read on the lips as opposed to sign language which can be understood by both parties.
Lip-reading is less predictable and can vary from speaker to speaker. In order for a lip-reader to determine whether or not he/she can read lips, an in personal interview must be conducted. The ability to read lips depends on a person’s pronunciation, mouth shape, facial hair, the lighting in a room, whether or not the person mumbles, etc. The lip-reader also relies on information provided by context.
